It’s already a day after the day I got fired laid off (thanks to everyone for explaining the difference). Time flies.
The only thing that really pisses me off about the whole thing is that I was filling out the paperwork to start/finish my masters this year. That’s now on hold, and that bugs me.
On the other hand, I got to thinking about this and in some ways this is a good thing. Some of you know I’ve been flirting with job-hunting for awhile now, and even got a few very interesting responses to posting my resume, but I never went anywhere with it.
Why? Well, I liked my job, the people, and the paycheck. It wasn’t challenging (anymore), but everything that needed doing got done.
When you do a job you like long enough, you get pretty efficient at it… some tasks (getting ready for a training trip) that once took me 3 days to complete take me about 35 minutes now. It’s comfortable. It’s safe.
It’s (dare I say it without the irony) stable.
So, I didn’t look around at anything else too hard — the economy being what it was then and is now, there are better things to do with one’s time than job hop, looking for a slightly more interesting job, when you already have a breadwinner.
Of course, when you do that (sit idly by), you aren’t really improving yourself.
So in one very serious way, this could be exactly what I needed, since it gives me the opportunity to do what I’ve been wanting to do for about six months anyway — change jobs. It’s exciting.
Well, at least sort of exciting. Better than sitting here waiting for my coworker to selflessly quit so that I can have the position instead.

Wow, I am sorry to hear you were laid off. I know everything will work out for the best, though. Good luck!

Laid off or fired? Last post said layoff, this post said fired. Did you get a severance package? Could they rehire you in a different position? Would you take it if they offered?

Sorry to hear this. I guess everyone is getting splattered by this shitty economy. I sure hope it turns around soon.

I will say that you've been seeming less than wildly enthused about your old job of late. Which likely means that, once you've got something new you're doing, this will turn out to have been one of those "opportunity" kind of problems that you can actually feel positive about.
Sounds good on paper, at least.

I've pinged our IT Training guy, btw, to see if there are any openings. I suspect, given our current overhead budget crunch, the prospects are not good, but the inquiry is the least I can do.

I didn't realize that there was a somantic difference between laid off and fired :) I always figured it was just politically correct speak.
I got the severence package thing (pretty decent), and my boss mentioned several times that he hopes that this will be nothing more than a paid vacation for me, with a return to work at the end of it.
Would I take it if they offered? Depends on whether or not I've found something new by then. I do need a change, and even if they pay isn't quite the same, I might stay at the new job. Hard to say, though.
That's crazy talk anyway -- I don't dare entertain thoughts of that nature.

Hey brother, I thought of calling you last night but I figured you had had lots of that. You are amazingly smart in lots of different areas, you have so many ways you can go. New job, school full time - let Jackie carry all the bills because I am sure she would love doing that!!! You have so many options - see, falling down and having to get up again can be good, or at the very least enlightening!! I love you and keep me posted.
