Are we playing the same game? The version I was playing, it wasn't that hard to get fliers that would faceplant just shy of 500.
If you hit line drives, sometimes you can get that lucky bounce to push you to 587. Highest I heard of was 593.

There are in fact two different penguin games. One of them... the one I orginally linked to, has much 'shorter' physics.
I found the link to the one Ian played, where you can faceplant the penguin out to about 500 feet... I managed to slide one out to 593. :)
I'm fairly certain the longer one is a hacked version of the original code, because there aren't any FLAGs out past 300.
