I’m not much of a news hound, and bears-cave isn’t much of a news site, but I do try to keep myself vaguely aware of what’s going on. The fighting in Afghanistan (where it sounds like they’ve moved to the use of A-10 Thunderbolts), ties closely into the rest of the Middle East, especially Saudia Arabia. (Dave has lots to say about this in his entry “Foreign concepts”, go check that out if you like.)

This (long) article goes into a great deal of depth on the U.S. history with the ‘kingdom’, with details of which I was completely unaware. If you have any interest in what might and might not happen in that region, you should read this. Interesting and Disturbing (typical of most of the big news these days).
