That’s right, Monday Mission 2.26

1. In the United States of America, it was recently ruled that the phrase “one nation under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance is unconstitutional. Do you agree with this ruling? Should the phrase “under God” be removed? Why?

I don’t mean anything by this personally towards anyone (many of your comments have been very interesting in a “remember when” kind of way), but why is everyone with a blog and a keyboard writing about this? I simply don’t find the topic that riveting, I guess.

Do I think the “under God” bit should be removed? No, and here’s why: recited aloud, the pledge is more rhythmic if you leave the phrase in than it is without, in my opinion.

My additional opinion — that’s the most important purpose that the contested phrase serves.

2. When was the last time you took a road trip? Where did you go and what did you do?

It’s probably been over a year ago. Let’s say that Christmas of 2000, we drove back to South Dakota to visit family. There have been another trip since then, but I don’t recall it.

3. Do you have any vacations planned for this summer? Already gone? Where to and what?

We’re driving out to South Dakota this week, leaving tomorrow and getting back on Saturday evening, but I wouldn’t really call any of it a vacation — I want to see everyone, but there isn’t a single event planned that I would categorize relaxing or entertaining.

That fact that the whole thing is bracketed by two 10-hour drives is not lost on me, either.

4. What is the most drastic change to your appearance that you have ever made? Are you brave enough to post a photo?

A photo of the drastic change to appearance? I doubt any such thing exists. I’ve shaved my head dozens of times since about 97 (although the first time was in 92), but that’s not really a drastic change for me anymore, since I do it all the time.

5. Tell me about something to which you are committed?

Preparing Justin to live self-sufficiently and honestly.

6. Now tell me about something you just flat-out gave up on.

My aunt. If we never exchange another word in my lifetime, I doubt I’d give it another thought.

7. (new saga) I’ve had it, this place is just wearing me out. You too? We need a break! Let’s head out and go someplace new. You make the plans, I’ll get things ready. So what do you have it mind, and did you want me to pick up anything special to pack for the trip?

Someplace new? I’ve been a lot of places, so new is sort of hard…

Lets say China — I’d really like to wander the countryside a little bit. If that is just a little too far, I’d take Japan or even Hawaii. Bring some good walking shoes, the camera, sunscreen, and a portable DVD player with dual headsets for the plane ride.

China, Japan, and Hawaii are too far? Then I’d have to say Belize… add some bug spray to the list.
