Monday Mission 2.29

1. Do you remember your first encounter with computers? Tell me about that.

My high school’s Chemistry/Comp Ed. teacher was also the local IBM PC dealer. Hence, for the time, we had a pretty kick-ass computer lab. When I went away to college, I bought a computer from him (or a close friend of his maybe, since I think by then he’d given up on that racket): IBM 286. 1 meg of ram, 20 meg HDD, 3.5” floppy. The monitor and motherboard were all in one big piece. I added a modem a few years later.

You could drop that damn thing down a flight of stairs and it would boot. Loved that thing.

2. How late can you stay up and still be functional the next day? Do you do that very often?

Consistently, I can stay up til about 1 am and be fine, but I’ll be a few minutes late to work. Very lately, I’ve been going to be earlier (10 or 11) and getting up earlier — seven hours after I go to bed, I wake up, regardless.

I can do one all-nighter or similar stupidity and be fine… doing two in a row would be bad.

How do I function on all-nighters. We’ll all see very soon, won’t we?

3. When was the last really good hug you got from another adult? Who was it and what was the situation?

That would be Jackie, probably yesterday morning. It was cool yesterday, which always leads to much increased huggage.

Oddly, Rey’s always good for a hug too, in a manly cuban way.

4. One thing about children is that they all like to draw. We all shared the same ability and skill level at one time. Do you still like to draw? (Not do you think you draw well, or do others, but do you like to?) If not, how come? Did you get discouraged at some point?

I like drawing, and sometimes I don’t even suck at it — I think with work I’d be okay (I posted some stuff I did back in college up here awhile ago… go look for it).

It’s just not the creative thing that I “do”, thus, it gets shoved into that ‘once in a blue moon’ slot.

5. I way overslept today. I had to head to work with no shower (don’t get too close), and I am not in the best of moods. Have you ever overslept on a day you had something important going on? What’s the story there?

When something important is going to happen the next day, I have a horrible time sleeping, and find myself constantly waking up to check the time.

Going to work without a shower? I’d call in sick first.

6. Ever go shopping for something you know you can’t afford? You look at it and even think about how it will look when you get it home, somehow you justify the cost and believe it can happen? And just before you get to the counter come to your senses? What was the last thing you almost bought, but thought better of it? And why the heck do we do that to ourselves?

That would be the Flip Dictionary, which is a cross between a thesaurus and that friend of yours who always knows the word for that thing you can’t think of the word for.

I was actually at the counter with it before I decided against it, not because of the cost ($20 at Borders, which is a steal when comparing it’s size to the $8 fiction novels — when the hell did paperbacks start costing more than lunch?), but because I literally didn’t know where I’d put it — we need more shelf space so badly — I’m carrying around Jackie’s copy of the Everyday Writer in my laptop bag because I don’t have a spot for it in the office.

7. (It begins again…) It’s all such a blur now. I’d asked you to help me wake up but the alarm didn’t go off. It was 10 till and just I knew I’d be late. Somehow you got me here on time. How did you do that?

Simple: I drove and you got dressed in the pickup. (2 minutes for a shower, even.)

It would fall down a flight of stairs and boot, but it would also do the strangest things to Civ at 2 in the morning.

Hard drive? You were lucky! Mine had a cassette tape drive and floppy floppy disks. We used to dream of hard drives.

{Sorry, I had a Monty Python "Four Yorkshiremen" moment.}

My first computers were an IBM XT with a 10 MB hard disk, a 5.25 floppy and 512KB of RAM and a Commodore 64 with a floppy drive.

Got em at about the same time.
