(well, okay, two days…)

Monday Mission, via Confessions of a Hootress:

1. Ever considered just deleting your Blog and not doing it anymore?

Unlike many of the folks I know that have blogs (but not unlike the people who host my favorite blogs), my web site didn’t start with the inception of the blog.

Blog: May of ‘01.
Site: 1992 or ‘93

95% of what’s on this site came before the blog, and it represents quite a bit of work on my part, so no, I doubt I’d ever take it down.

I doubt I’d drop the blog itself either, but for a different reason — it exists to keep me in the habit of writing something every day. If I get into the mode of writing fiction every day (not quite there yet), the production on this site might drop off, but I don’t think I’d ever let it go — too much of a glory ho’.

2. How about a quick review of the last movie you saw?

That would be Signs.

3. What’s your favorite gadget? Are you lusting for any new ones? Will you ever be satisified???

I’m still very happy with my PDA, although I managed to put one scratch and one hairline crack in the faceplate almost immediately upon purchase (with the screen protector film on, you can’t see or feel them). I also like my digital camera, especially that it’s encouraging us to take more photos.

What do I want? A screaming-fast laptop, actually. Barring that, a good, reliable laptop and a screaming fast desktop. I’ve made do with my current box for quite a few years now, but I always seem to migrate parts from my old PC’s into my new ones to save cash, and I want to leave this box entirely intact this time. The added cost this entails has slowed down my normally-regular upgrade.

Will I ever be satisfied? Technologically speaking, satisfaction is a fleeting thing.

4. Saturday night I played “UNO” for the first time in years, I mean it has been over 10 years since I played it. It was great fun, but it really made me want to learn how to play Backgammon again. What “table game” do you enjoy playing most with other people? Have you played it lately?

UNO is great fun for our whole family and a blast when we visit my side of the family. I really enjoy playing cribbage with Jackie’s folks, but it’s not very popular with my generation (I only know of three people who play), so that tends to be a South Dakota-only activity.

Aside from that, Lunch Money kicks ass.

5. About a year ago I was obsessed with losing weight and I dropped pretty low before I got a handle on things. Have you ever been obsessed with something so much that it was close to causing you physical or mental harm?

Online multi-user games. Not good. Too much time involvement for something with no benefit whatsoever in real life (aside from increased typing speeds).

6. Did you grow up in a family or community that displayed racist or prejudice attitudes? Did it influence you in any way, either toward or away from those views? How did you manage to avoid it, or did you?

Miller, SD was a strange place, which I’ll attribute to our town baker. He and his wife couldn’t have children, and adopted three black girls (wanted a big family, and had an easier time with, god help us, “less desirable” children. So, in this midwestern town, there were black kids, and it was no big deal. (Sort of… the girls acted pretty ‘white’, due to their upbringing — just ask them. My wife’s husband will be quick to point out that the town really isn’t open to people “acting Negro” as he puts it. He has reason to know.)

Then again, there was the family that adopted a native american kid… yeah, he wasn’t the best guy in the world (nor was his adoptive family much good as a starting place), but let’s just say the town wasn’t perfect.

Did it influence me? I think I police my own thoughts and actions quite unforgivingly for racist influences in my interactions with anyone… I owe it to my family and my friends if not also to myself.

7. Good grief, I am starving! You got anything to eat around here?

Gah. Anything you like you should have… whatever you eat, I won’t, and that’s all to the good.

BONUS: What did you tell them?

*sigh* Nothing they didn’t already know.
