Geek used to be nearly synonymous with nerd, indicating a scholarly bent and a certain social ineptitude.
It’s not that way anymore. Geek has somehow mutated into the english version of the original Japanese slang otaku (which itself as mutated). Here’s my stab at the new definition of the word:
Geek - n.: someone who is very ‘into’ a particular subject, either as a fan or as a participant. Examples: A web design geek. A music geek. A Buffy geek. A psychology geek. Et cetera.

Always been a geek but now I can classify it.
Buffy Geek, Angel Geek, Card collecting geek, doll collecting geek, gaming geek..... Dave G. geek :)
