Looking down the page, I’m seeing a lot of posts about music lately.

Don’t worry, this evening I’ll be able to post about… well, Firefly, and…

BTW Thanks for the loan of your Firefly tape. It's a decent show. Not sure I understand the obcession yet, but its amusing to watch until Farscape returns. Maybe I will like it better with time.

Let's see if I can sum up the Firefly thing:

1) It's clanky sci-fi -- things are beat up and worn out. It's why I like the Alien series (#4 written by Whedon) and the Empire Strikes Back.
2) Westerns. You know Jacob -- there's just no bad here for me.
3) Characters. I'm a sucker for characters over plot (though I like both and I think Firefly will get with the big story arcs eventually). Farscape has some great ... epic characters, but in most cases they don't really feel like people I would ever really meet... they're all into their own personal dramas and in the real world I don't really like people who are into their personal dramas. The Firefly crew feels like people I'd be happy to know in real life.
4) Actors. Firefly's got a great cast that's doing great work with their characters. Like Dave said, I'd be happy with a 'day in the life' episode on the ship -- that would be really good stuff.
5) Finally, I seem to be wired at some cellular level to like the scripts that come out from Joss' crew... sometimes that's just the way it works.

The space-western aspect is fun. And the junky ship is cool too. I guess I just want to see more character development. Probably a function of them showing episodes out of order, but I don't feel like I really know any of the characters beyond the captain. They could easily cut out the preacher for example and I would not even notice the difference.

I was never a Buffy/Angel fan (probably the only guy in America who isn't), so I haven't really had the exposure to Wheadon's style. Over all I do like the show. There is some good potential there. I just hope they can meet it.

It impresses me no end that the cast already seems to have gelled. I've never know that to happen in the first year of a series. Towards the end of the first season, yes, but this seems to have happened quickly. I've been forced to watch tapes of Babylon 5 lately and the first episodes are rather laughable.
