Rear had to go in the 80s and 90s because the tech just wasn't there to operate anti-lock properly on slick conditions with rear-wheel.
My little front-wheel drive Beretta GT could go places and do things in snow that no rear-wheel drive anything could do.
That said, now that proper anti-skid and traction control is here and works right even down to the sub-30K autos, bring back rear.
Your AWD cars and trucks Audis, Olds, BMWs and whatnot are 80-90% front.
