I haven’t been talking much about what I’m doing now that I’m not working at my old job. Obviously, I’m referring to it as the old job, so there must be a new one, right?

Yeah, sorta. Right now I’m doing documentation stuff for a big healthcare provider in Colorado. Dress is casual, I decide my hours, and other than that it’s pretty much like the stuff I’ve done before except that I’m actually doing what I was initially hired to do instead of, you know, something else.

Generally it’s cool (okay, one coworker is really far too in love with those personality profiles that they give you in Small Group Dynamics class) and will allow me to put much more time into the writing projects that I’d like to finish up this year: bottom line, I’d like to have Hidden Things and Strange Weapons out the door before November. Lots of revision work to do for that, but that’s really what this whole change has been about. (Okay, that and getting to do what I was actually hired to do.)

They’ve provided me a desktop unit and a desk to put it on in an office a few minutes from the house, but there’s a laptop with my name on it somewhere in the corporate ether and the expectation that I’ll need it in order to work from home on a ‘company’ machine — it’s a contract job with no end date.

My (nominal) boss emailed me today to set up a time every week when she and I could get caught up on my projects. She suggested a time and then commented “but let me know if that’s not good for you or if you’re not going to be in that day and we’ll work something out.” This from the same person who told me my schedule was “whatever gets the work done.’

Macro-management from people who understand that salaried is different than hourly.

I’m a big fan.

I'd say where do I sign up, but my job is pretty free wheeling too, except for the work from home part - but I don't think I would want my clients knowing where I live - ever!
