I just noticed i was doing it when I reread a couple (dozen) emails I'd sent. I don't even think about it.

I think you have too.
Since email lacks all the physical clues that people use for other forms of personal communication, I've always felt that smilies or frownies need to be in emails.
I had a boss who had the extra special ability to be very deadpan in all her communications and I had to tell her flat-out to either use smilies or not to email me anymore since she left you not knowing if she was pleased or pissed in her messages and it was bugging the shit out of me.

One of the oddest things at my job is my boss's assistant, who insists on using text messaging shorthand in her emails.
"What time would be best 4U to have the staff meeting?" is just WRONG.
And she's older than me... I really don't get it.

I am working with a girl that abbreviates EVERYTHING...today she abbreviated WAS as WS....grumble...but now I'm going off-subject.
