I’ve lost the links to this, but I thought I’d share what I remember. From Colorado:

  • A high-school student wins a science talent search for inventing a glove that translates your sign-language hand motions, voice-recognition-style, to text, displayed on a portal tablet.

(I think the best inventions are ones that make people slap their forehead for not thinking of it themselves. The cool thing is, when you do that with his glove on, the screen prints out “DOH!”)

That is interesting -- though, as the article notes, it's basically only good for "fingerspell" -- ASL is actually, syntactically, very different from English. Still, cool idea.
