The surreptitious glances over your shoulder as you make your move.

The glance askance, stepping quietly up your contact. Your dealer.

The guilty twinge as you hand over money you really shouldn’t be spending for that forbidden thing that brings you a few minutes of relief.

You know what I’m talking about.

You’ve done it.

Comfort shopping.

Don’t deny it: you feel like crap, it’s been a bad day, and you want to feel better. Junk food is nice, but there’s nothing better than splurging on a bag full of new books, cd, games, whatever. It soothes the soul.

But you have to buy. In this scenario, going/looking/exerting self-control only makes the whole thing worse. Buying is part of the healing process.

For me, it can be as simple as going to KFC and getting a sandwich instead of making something at the house for lunch. Sure, the food is a comfort too, but splurging on the purchase gives me that small sense of defiant decadence that I need to cheer up.

What was your last comfort buy?

Last comfort buys.

Another G4 Titanium laptop.
A Dragon-Models 1/6th scale Delta Force Operator Action Figure.
The Complete Frank Sinatra Columbia Years 16 CD set.
Coming up this weekend, Recaro seats for my Silverado pickup, with inflating lumbar support.

Oh, and I forgot.

Desert Eagle Jericho, 9mm pistol.

The side-arm of the IDF. If it's good enough to kill a terrorist with, it's good enough for me.

My last one was The Sword and Fist (D&D), Alien Anthology (Star Wars), and The Starship Guide (Star Wars). All at once. Hey they were 50% off at Game Keeper. Bite me.

Games. Computer games. Usually purchased at a CompUSA while on a business trip, leading to long, long nights staying up in the hotel, shooting things.

Aaaaahhhhh ....

I heard Diplomatic Immunity was out. It's been in my Amazon cart for about a month, but never purchased.

I spent $100 yesterday to get the free shippping. $20 was DI, $60 was the FFX soundtrack. The rest were filler romance novels.

But comfort buys? Does Virtua Fighter 4 for the PS2 count?

a very comfy, pretty hip, not so sexy pair of shoes, I validated it by saying I was already writing a check for shoes for Malik and they were on sale.
