After thousands of studies, hundreds of millions of prescriptions and tens of billions of dollars in sales, two things are certain about pills that treat depression:

Along with ads for “get the technical training you need, to prepare for the economic upturn”, few ads irk me more than those that advertise new studies to chemically combat depression.

I’ll acknowledge that depression can be debilitating and needs treatment, but I’ve never been in favor of heavy medication replacing counseling and a little old fashion boot-strap therapy. Obviously, no offense is intended towards anyone out there currently suffering from clinical depression, but this report seems to verify my personal belief on this subject.

Simply stated, if your body can fix the problem (and this seems to indicate that in many cases, barring a glandular deficiency, it can), then your body should fix the problem, and it is the responsibility of your physician to help that happen, not drug you til you don’t notice.

There are times for using medicine to dull pain, but if a doc tries to tell me that such a thing is necessary for more than the few hours before, during and after a surgery or sustained injury, I start to get a bit skeptical.

I must admit after being a part of the mental health treatment team for about 2 weeks now I agree with you for the most part. There are certain mental diseases that require medication because the chemicals in your body are just too fucked up, but for the more mild of depressions nothing is more theraputic then taking a walk, going to work or going to bitch at your therapist. The changes around this place at spring time are amazing, and talk about being drugged into submission, don't even get me started.
