Mat at honan.net has an interesting take on bloggers as cult movie reviewers.

If September 11 and the subsequent War on Terrorism gave the blogger-as-political-pundit credibility, Episode II will do the same for blogger-as-cultural-commentator. Thanks to bloggers, Star Wars Episode II will have more reviews written about it than any movie that has come before it.

I don’t know if Episode II will win the (booby)prize for this, as Spiderman has certainly garnered it’s share of blog-reviews as well, but the observation that blogs will have a stronger influence over the general perception of “how is this movie being received” than traditional movie reviewers is a good one.

The final tell-tale, of course, is and always will be the film’s box office sales. Not even blogs can outweigh that.
