James Lileks of 9/11/02 travels back in time and give James Lileks of 9/11/01 some good advice.

If I had the ability to do that today. I think I’d probably keep it short.

  • You’re right, Denver’s not really much of a target. Things are going to change, but it won’t feel like much has from day to day.
  • People will surprise you over the next year; the President won’t be one of them.
  • Don’t worry about having to do much flying in the face of the new security, for two reasons: job layoffs, and the fact that the “increased security” is really pretty lame.
  • Thinking about the firefighters in New York is still going to be the only thing about 9/11 that makes you want to cry, even after a year.

Yeah to that last one.

Here's to all of the people whose first agenda on that day became to help as many others as they could.

The firefighters, the police, the office workers that herded their coworkers out the door - broke the haze of panic and 'I've just got to do one more thing' - and moved them out of the office, and into the unknown...

To the people streetside that offered water, and cell phones, and whatever they could...

Lots of heros that day, many of them forever unknown, forever unsung.
