I love the way Anthony Stewart Head’s voice sounds. (He sings on Buffy sometimes, and he used to sing in musicals and stuff — what pipes.)
So he made this album with this guy I’ve never heard of. I bought it (along with the Once More With Feeling soundtrack and the Buffy Soundtrack (it was a Buffy day, sue me)).
I now hate this guy who did the album with him. Hate.
Whoever wrote the music treated Head’s voice like just another electronic keyboard instrument (with all the (lack of) soul therein), mixed it in with the rest of his soft-beat electronics-from-my-mom’s-basement crap and just sapped all the grit and soul and life out of That Voice.*
Pisses me off.
Here’s how he should make an album:
One mic, hooked up to a decent deck.
One acoustic guitar.
One coffee house.
One Anthony Stewart Head.
18 covers of classic rock tunes.
That’s it. Instead, you get soul-sucked-synth-shit.
* - And wrote every damn part at either the very top or very bottom of Head’s range, instead of playing to the strength of his vocals. Truly, he treated ASH as though he were just another instrument.
