IT Guy working on ‘my’ machine today: I’ve got those software packages you asked for installed, but the USB ports still aren’t working.
Me: Oh…
ITG: Yeah, USB’s really not supported in 2000.

[blink, blink.]
[thinking back on the last two years I’ve had usb mice, keyboards, and sync cradles running on my 2000 machine at home and the laptop I had at the last job. desperately trying not to say he’s full of crap, because everyone’s been pretty nice here.]

Me: Umm, okay… how soon can I get XP on this machine?
ITG: These two software packages work (points at two icons I haven’t yet touched and won’t before September) in XP, but aren’t supported.
Me: That I can live with. Not being able to sync up my calendar and pull files to my portable drive, I can’t.
ITG: So…
Me: Yes please. Thank you.

Yess.....

That was one of the good things about my old job. I had all of the IT/Admin passwords and permissions. So if our IT guys told me something that I knew was wrong, I could go in and fix it after they left.

Ahhh....The good old days of Commando Admin's!

(Boggles mildly.)

And good strategic move not throwing the guy's ignorance in his face -- stupid IT techs may be bad at making your life good, but are good at making your life bad.

Yeah, despite limited 'can install software' Admin priviledges, I can't get into the system's hardware setup. V. Annoying.

*eyeroll* "USB's really not supported" translates roughly to, "I don't understand it so I'm not going to try." Yay, you.

The first step, I've found, was actually enabling USB in the Bios.

The second: put the system on the actual OS you think you're supporting -- he mentioned 2000 -- it occured to me about 10 minutes later that the things running NT 4.0 :P.

I don't know what's worse. Bad IT people. Bad users.

I was a good IT person.

So good that it took two people to replace me when I left.

So good that the two people who replaced me and my old Boss still email me asking questions.

USB and NT Windows. You know what the funny thing is? NT was suposed to get USB support in SP6. Then MS canned it in the SP so they could push 2K.
