Prompted by Seki’s The Bug Game, I thought I’d mention the version of the same game that’s evolved in the Testercars. The two are remarkably similar.
The Hug Bug Game
Rule 1: No slug bugs. Hitting people sucks. (Rule is generally waived if Justin’s playing with one of his friends in the backseat.)
Rule 2: Whoever calls it first gets the point.
Rule 3: You must correctly call “Hug Bug”, generation, and the color. (“Hug Bug: New, Green!”) If you don’t, someone else in the car can steal it.
Rule 4: It must actually be a bug. If you call a Hug bug that turns out to not be a Hug bug, you lose all points.
Rule 5: Points can be redeemed for hugs at the end of the drive on a 1:1 basis. (Most aren’t anymore, but there was a time not so long ago…)
Usually, Justin kicks the crap out of us at this game (due mostly to pesky things like my having to actually watch where I’m going and his one-time strong motivation to get lots of hugs), but in one epic confrontation a few weeks ago he and I tallied over 35 bugs on the way to the dentist’s office and I only lost by two. I even led for awhile… ahh the glory of it. We still talk about it.
“Remember the Hug Bug game going to the Dentist?”
“Thirty-nine…”
“Yeah. That was cool.”
We’re so lame.
