Finally watched Mallrats tonight, which I borrowed from Rey and Juli sometime during the Reagan administration and have been holding onto for just the right time. I guess tonight was it.

My response? Eh. Obviously one of Smith’s earlier things — it’s funny to me that most of the ‘name’ actors in this movie have vastly improved their acting since this came out, while the guy who plays Jay was much better back then.

On Smith himself: watch Mallrats, then watch Dogma — compare the relative skill behind the dialogue of each piece — he’s definately grown into his craft.

Final verdict: decent, but nothing I’d really need to own even for the sake of collection, just the thing to end a wild and wacky night.

Well, even Kevin Smith will tell you that Mallrats was his Worst movie. He wasn't happy about it, and since it was his first studio movie, things didn't go as well as they should have.

Being told which actors to use and what he could and could not put into the movie really put him into a bit of a funk.

There are still parts that I like and laugh at in the movie, but I would rather watch Clerks or Chasing Amy or Jay and Bob strike back (especially the Deleted Scenes on the DVD).
