It’s worth nothing that, when we moved into this house, the front yard ‘landscaping’ consisted of a strip of rocks around the front of the house about a yard wide, with a few bushes planted in it.
No trees on this south-facing lawn. No actual flowers. Nada.
We trisected the lawn with two quarrystone paths leading down from the front door to either of the two sidewalks that corner the lot. Planted stuff around the paths, and have slowly been expanding out from the paths, removing fifteen year old groundcover junipers as we went, mulching and planting whatever we felt like trying out — making mistakes (like planting yarrow and daisies right next to one of the sprinkler heads, or not going outside to work on anything until eleven in the morning) left and right.
But when a neighbor family bikes by and the Mom shouts out “you guys have just done amazing things with that property”, the sun just doesn’t feel as hot.
…for about three seconds. Then I’m right back to silently berating myself for my lousy timing.
Update: the Highlands Ranch HOA has sent out over four hundred “your lawn is unacceptably dry” letters during the month of July. We have not gotten one.
I don’t know what to think. Is it me? Is it something I said? Are we breaking up? TALK TO ME!
