7.5 million Americans have gone solo — using only cells phones and dropping their land line entirely.

I’m here to tell you that if it weren’t for the fact that we have to have basic local phone access in order to have DSL (the only high speed access available in our burb), we’d probably be another household on that list. Personally, it would give me a lot of pleasure to throw out the cordless handset we have and not have to replace it.

If our cell quality here were better, I'd be right with you (with, alas, a dial-up line for Net connectivity).

Although, it's kind of nice to have the phone available in multiple rooms of the house without having to carry it around.

Our landline phone bill just jumped up and it's going to jump up again.

Lou's response - maybe we should look into cable phone service.
My response - maybe we should look into just using our cellphones.

*sigh*

I took the plunge about a month or two ago and I have never been happier!

Haven't had a landline since I moved to NH, now 3 1/2 years ago.

And haven't looked back. There's just no reason to pay for it when the cell always has minutes left anyway.

Any stats on stubborn people such as myself who refuse to use/get cell phones?

Well...Okay...I used one once...but that was just to order pizza!

They don't run stats on people like that because... well... they don't matter :)

Of course we matter, after all we're gonna be the only survivors of the mass brain cancer epidemic. And I just pity the poor people who carry those things around in their front pockets too (ouch!).

A) my cell reception at the house isn't good enough
B) What about 911 / reverse 911? CellCos aren't quite there yet are they?

The friendly paranoiac in me feels that there's no real point to making your location continuously trackable by the government (or just the cell company) when everyone else already has cell phones you can mooch off... ;)

You've hit on it: the best thing is to have no phones at all -- you only have to talk to someone when you initiate it. Paradise :)

Fun fake-tech. Someone calls your Universal Number and the phone closest to you rings... any phone :)

Seems like just the thing to punish criminal telemarketers with.

We have only had cells for several years. The problem I have is that if I don't answer, people give me hell, because they know I have the phone with me. Sometimes I just don't want to answer the phone. Somehow, they think I'm expected to.
